sunday. susan candiotti, cnn, indiana. >> thank you very much. this has been a day of taking stock for victims of that deadly rash of tornados that hit 11 states. many lost everything. the extreme weather claimed at least 39 lives in kentucky, indiana, ohio, iand georgia. no corner of this small town was spared. homes annihilated and trees plucked out of the ground and there were scenes like this all over the midwest and south tonight. the number of people killed from the storm has risen to 21 in kentucky. despite damage, we are hearing stories of survival. here's tim in the hard hit town. >> reporter: on the out skirts of west liberty, kentucky, tornado survivors return home. >> this was your house? >> this was my house, yes. >> where is the house now? >> across the street in the parking lot. >> the rubble is across the street. that's your house? >> yes. >> she had only moments to make it into the basement and rode out the storm. >> can you believe you are safe and sound? >> it was all rather quickly. so quickly that i did not have a lot of time to think. you think back on it and

-hit state of indiana, where the governor has just finished a tour of the devastation. at least 14 people there died. joining me right now live by phone from the town of marysville, jeff petrowski. a storm chaser who helped children get out of a school that was severely damaged by the tornado. jeff, describe the scene for me as that storm was approaching. >> reporter: that's right. we're in marysville now. we've arrived here about an hour ago and did a survey. the south end of town sustained the most heavy damage. the governor just left here moments ago heading across indiana doing additional damage surveys with a team of people. the military has also moved in with search and rescue vehicles. in the south side of town in my live stream you can see there's four to five homes -- farms that had heavy damage and are gone. the tornado here was about 200 yards wide and it tracked through the city on the southeast side. everybody has been accounted for. most people are -- we do not have any injuries, just a couple injuries, no fatalities but marked damage on the south side of town. >> you're tal

. this video like the first one shot in henryville, indiana. all told at least 37 people are dead. the number of missing are impossible to know right now. i'm don lemon thank you for joining us in the cnn newsroom. i want to bring in meteorologist jackie jarris. first the video from the gas station. >> you can see the debris within that funnel. it's amazing to think how close they must have been to that tornado and feeling the impact and that sucking in as air rushes into the tornado. there you can see in the middle that swirling around that's debris. we think there might be one or two vortices. this was in an intense cation stage. and the i-reporter video from kevin wells. >> can we listen to it a little bit more and talk about it? >> i have friends over there. >> [ bleep ]. >> jackie that is so frightening. kevin will join us live in a little bit. this is incredible video. >> we have new information in this hour that that tornado was an ef-4. it is one of the strongest tornados ever recorded in the top 2%. winds between 166 to 200 miles per hour. that can cause massive devastation. look at

of the hardest hit areas of indiana was a town of henryville, north of louisville. josh levs joins us now with incredible images that we just got from that area. >> yes, it's coming to us from the newsroom this afternoon. hello again to all of you folks. this is some of the most dramatic video that we have seen from these storms and these tornadoes that ripped through parts of this country. let's take first a look at this video to set it up. okay. here's what you're seeing here. this is inside a gas station in henryville. a man named mike who had just not long before gotten inside that gas station and got a little bit of video. you can see a little bit out the window as the tornado came through. then he steps outside, let's watch this next video together. there it is, we're going to stay on this video. look at that. this is incredibly powerful. and tells us a story of what had happened. these tornadoes came through and actually flattened the gas station across the street from where he was. he says it was blind luck he came inside this shell gas station instead of another. look how huge th

zone. >> it's hard to believe that harsh winter weather is hitting henryville, indiana after summer-like killer tornadoes tore through the area. abc's ginger zee is there. good morning, ginger. >> reporter: good morning, rob and paula. yesterday we flew over the tornadic annihilation. we've seen a lot of images like this on the ground. but to see it from above was something completely different. when you see all of the homes wiped from their foundation, you see the trees that have been snapped and plucked from that huge tornado, and really when you fly above it it gives you that width or that breadth that it covered, at times a half a mile, this ef 4 monster had winds of 175 miles per hour. and boy, could you see it from up there in that chopper. so we went over not only the town of pekan, where poor baby angel at this time we found was taken off life support. and that was that one family who now was altogether taken from that tornado. but in pekan the tornado then moves to henryville. from there to marysville, where one church stands alone. so many stories of lucky survival because

to the air force academy and is a graduate of indiana university's law school. he is a huge hoosier fan and i can only imagine how proud he was of the indiana elite eight basketball performance against kentucky last friday. the home thing that -- wrong was that kentucky beat indiana by a vote of -- by one point, 73-72. so that kind of ended indiana in the march madness. another part of the behind-the-scenes function of the house that john's strategic wisdom and advice was critical to the continuity of the house function was in the days and weeks following the tragic events of september 11, 2001. and he performed there admirably. so john has led the parliamentarian's office in a collegial and a very profession al-manar, to the benefit of the office, the members and the house and we are fortunate for his service and wish him well in retirement and we will miss him. i yield back. mr. dingell: mr. speaker, at this time i yield two minutes to my distinguished friend from virginia, through my good friend from ohio, to the gentleman from virginia. >> thank you for yielding time. i'm not from virgini

. we give him kentucky, west virginia, north carolina, indiana, wisconsin, even if he won all of those states, with gingrich in the race getting some delegates, romney coming in second or coming in third and getting some delegates, look what happens? romney still clinches the nomination, still clinches the nomination, maybe, maybe if santorum could take away california, romney still clinches the nomination. santorum would also have to win some place like new jersey to deny him and romney would have a big lead. that's one scenario. even if you take gingrich out on the theory that maybe he exits the race, say after a santorum victory in louisiana, the proportional delegate rules in most states suggest again even being extraordinarily generous to senator santorum that romney will be difficult to beat. let me show you that scenario. i'll change the map a little bit. go back to where we are today. even if you take speaker gingrich out, and then let's just say again santorum wins wisconsin, wins indiana, switch that one, let's say he wins west virginia, we'll switch that one, he wins kentuck

're talking about the same area that was hit yesterday. kentucky, illinois, indiana. parts of the ohio area and down through portions of tennessee a moderate risk. any time you see a moderate risk we're talking about a potential for tornadoes once again. this will be during the afternoon tomorrow. we are hoping they do not see a repeat of what we saw during the day yesterday. as far as our weather is concerned the same frontal boundary that is going to cause thunderstorms there will move our way and i think a good chance for some thunderstorms in our area overnight friday night into early saturday morning. right now i don't think the severe threat is quite there but we have to watch out for some stronger storms and we'll of course watch them for you here at nbc 4. by the end of the afternoon though we get out of here and we're looking at sunshine late in the day on saturday. that's not bad at all. as far as our next couple days go how about this evening? looking good. still a little bit on the cool side. you'll notice the temperatures dipping down. 57 to about 64 degrees. but just gorgeous

, missouri, illinois, tennessee, indiana and kentucky. over 300 reports of severe weather across the region described frightening details such as wind gusts of over 80 miles per hour and golf size hail storms. there were reports of power outages for thousands of people particularly in my home town of louisville. downed power lines, flash flooding were reported all across the state. news reports and accounts from my own staff tell me there's been considerable damage across kentucky including dozens of homes and businesses damaged and several people injured. two people in mccracken county near paducah were rescued from an overturned mobile home and rushed to the hospital in critical condition. from what we know at this point, however, thankfully it appears no lives were lost in kentucky. unfortunately the same cannot be said elsewhere as the severe weather that was that raged through six other states reportedly has claimed at least 12 lives. i join my colleagues from the affected states in keeping think thoughts today, keeping in my thoughts today all those affected by these storms especially
